All it takes is them recycling Sonic 2 (and Sonic 2 beta) sprites to get all of these people ecstatic over Sonic. That's ALMOST as lazy as . . . say, adding a 4 to the game title. Hmm?
It's going to take more than namedropping a guy who ported the first few games to iPhones to get me even generally interested. The game looks like more of the same shit, and that new mechanic barely changes the gameplay.
To be fair, Christian Whitehead did more than merely port the games to mobile. He made Tails and Knuckles playable in Sonic 1, as well as added new pathways to levels to take advantage of Tails' flying and Knuckles' gliding abilities.
But Sonic 2 was easily the most dramatic change. He got rid of the infamous spike pit of doom in Mystic Cave Zone: Act 2, and instead made the pit into the entrance to the Hidden Palace Zone. He kept it as faithful as possible to the portions of the stage that were uncovered in countless ROM hacks over the years, but improvised where necessary (such as new badniks, and a completely new Dr. Robotnik boss battle) to make it into a full fledged level.
While I understand your stance on it, I guess the point I'm trying to make is.... I feel massive amounts more confident that with Christian Whitehead involved on the project, Sonic Mania is actually going to be Sonic The Hedgehog finally done right again, something we haven't really seen since Sonic Adventure 2 (or since Sonic & Knuckles, if you're not counting any 3D games in the series). Once Sonic Heroes came out, Sonic Team has been on a downward spiral of quality (although Sonic Generations did turn out pretty good, despite flaws).
