Semester is over, so I've been working on my backlog of books, movies, shows, and of course video games.
Titan Souls
Pretty neat boss endurance game with mechanics I haven't really experienced before. The bosses look pretty cool with their simplistic design and they are animated very well.
Shovel Knight (PS4)
Finally got around to playing it! Finished it in a few days, really fun game. I especially enjoyed the boss battles. Me and my bud also played through the Plague Knight DLC, looking forward to the other characters we'll get to play as down the line.
Gravity Rush Remastered
BluePoint does it again! This is a perfect port with upgraded visuals. Everything looks so much nicer and the game plays perfectly. If you have a PS4 and haven't gotten the chance to play Gravity Rush, fix that mistake! It's a wonderful adventure game with cool-as-shit mechanics.
Zombi (PS4)
It's not really much different from the original Wii U game, from what I can tell. I'm starting to get past where I stopped there. Still haven't found the new weapons, though. It's still an alright game with interesting concepts.
Moon Chronicles (3DS)
Got the first episode in a bundle a while back. The 60 fps is nice and the controls are pretty good, but it's not a very interesting game. Feels very inspired by Metroid Prime. Still, compared to their previous game Dementium: The Ward, this just isn't that interesting. I could only shoot at metal balls shooting bubbles at me for so long.
Runbow
a cool and very simple racing platformer that's up to 9 PLAYERS and online. Sounds awesome, and it's super fun. Buuuut it's exclusive to Wii U. Finding a full match is really hard, which sucks because the chaos that ensues is a real blast.
Swords and Soldiers II (Wii U)
From the same team behind my beloved Awesomenauts. Since they made a great 2D moba, I guess it makes sense that they would also make a pretty good 2D real-time strategy. There's not a lot to it, but it's charming and satisfying.
Starfox Zero
I've been hearing a lot of hate for this game, and feel it's pretty unjustified. Yeah, the controls are REALLY different, but they just take some getting used to. I will say one legitimate complaint is when you're given a forced perspective on the TV, making you have no choice but to use the first-person perspective on the gamepad. Otherwise, the game controls great. And it's really fun, not just another Starfox 64 (like a lot of people expected, probably). The game is also surprisingly difficult, especially the secret challenges. All in all, I find this game really satisfying.
Starfox Guard
The extra game that came with my copy of Starfox Zero. It's a really cool 3D defense game. But unlike most defense games, you don't just sit there and micromanage meters while NPCs kill everything. You have to attack all the enemies yourself with your security system, each camera equipped with a laser gun. Really fun and rewards fast reaction and quick thinking.
Lost Reavers
So this is a free-to-play multi-player only game . . . exclusive to Wii U. It's like they don't want anyone playing the game. Anyway! It's from developers behind games like Tekken and Soul Calibur and . . . honestly, it controls and plays just as well as you'd expect a third-person shooter from Japan to (I still stand by the notion that the country has only made one single good TPS, and that was Resident Evil 6). It's alright, I guess. Just nothing remarkable in the slightest. I'm also sick of doing the same two missions over and over again.
Pretty Girls Mahjong Solitaire
10/10!
But not really. I liked mahjong a lot as a kid, so this is kind of fun. The timer gives me so much anxiety, though. Almost done with it, pretty god damn hard at this point. And nothing is more frustrating than getting really far, just to find out you took the wrong path and have no matches left.
Gauntlet 2014 (PC)
Trash. Don't play it.
Alien Swarm
Idunno if I talked about this before, but went on a couple hours with some friends last night. It's a lot like Diablo and other overhead action games, but it's completely unforgiving. Even the slightest hiccups can cause you to die, and probably cause the rest of your team to get murdered as well. It's almost like old survival horror games, except it's mission-based and the pace is much faster. For a free game, this is really cool.
Slow Down, Bull!
from Insomniac Games, they made a nice little game where you control a bull in an area and collect buttons! How cute. Except the bull gets stressed out if you don't bounce off walls or cool off in ponds on the way. Odd little game, but still really neat.
Machine Gun Train Run
Another Contra clone, looks like it was made on Newgrounds 14 years ago. It's alright, but not much variety and the art style is pretty ugly.
